Programming Oops! Kids Got Playboy... Not Playtime

Well, here’s another great reason to watch what your kids are watching. Last week, a cable company in North Carolina accidentally aired the Playboy Channel on their Kids on Demand and Preschool on Demand channels -- not just for a few seconds or minutes, but for two hours.

Officials at the company were alerted about the glitch by moms who noticed that the bunnies weren’t the cute and fuzzy kind usually gracing the airwaves on those channels. I have to take a minute to laugh -- I mean, of all the channels to inadvertently show porn on. I also find it interesting that it took two hours to fix the problem. You have to wonder if they understood the urgent nature of the error.

Parents not being aware of what their children are watching is certainly hazard in living rooms coast to coast. Let's hope not too many preschoolers laid eyes on the (presumably bewildering, unquestionably inappropriate) adult entertainment being inadvertantly delivered to the wrong channel.

For me, the incident simply serves as yet another reminder to be more aware -- aware of what our kids are watching on TV, aware of the video games our children are playing and aware of the sites they’re surfing. It’s so difficult to keep up and so easy to assume all is kosher, but sometimes it isn’t. If our children are exposed to inappropriate content on television, the responsibility for controlling the good old remote control ultimately falls on us.
