In his career, Kiefer Sutherland, 43, has gone from rising talent (Stand by Me, 1986) to hot young actor (A Few Good Men, 1992) to has-been (he played a rabbit in a 1999 Canadian cartoon) to beloved TV action hero (24). Riding that kind of Hollywood roller-coaster could unsettle anyone, even unflappable Jack Bauer. But Sutherland's recent antics -- multiple DUIs, a physical fight at a party, public displays of drunkenness -- don't sound like a guy who's just trying to unwind. More like someone trying to self-destruct.
Sutherland's latest embarrassment was being thrown out of a London strip club late last week -- drunk, shirtless and spouting gibberish. Add this to the Brooke Shields headbutting incident in September, his drunken attack on a Christmas tree in 2006 and two DUIs in the last decade, and it all adds up to a disturbing pattern of behavior. Studios don't like hiring actors whose names get in the paper for being this reckless. If Sutherland values his career, why does he keep putting it in jeopardy again and again?
Our best guess: most likely, Sutherland is totally burned out. He grew up in the shadow of his esteemed father, actor Donald Sutherland, and after achieving movie stardom, he's been performing a demanding role on Fox's 24 for seven years -- furthermore, as the hit series films it's final season, now there's talk of transitioning straight into a feature film to keep the saga alive. Sutherland hasn't been a big movie star for well over a decade, and perhaps the prospect is making him a little crazy. If that's the case, we'd advise him to postpone that 24 movie (they can't make it without him, right?) and take a nice, long, soul-searching hike in Tibet. Because we love cowboy Kiefer, vampire Kiefer, and counter-terrorist Kiefer. But drunk and disorderly Kiefer? We're not so crazy about him.
