There are lots of things you share with your sister: Clothes. Secrets. Babysitting. But breast milk? Maybe if you're a Kardashian. Kim and Kourtney Kardashian appeared on Today yesterday talking up the premiere of the new season of the sisters' reality show, Kourtney & Kim Take Miami, and there was plenty of baby talk.
Due in July, Kim, 32, says on the way to the studio, she and Kourtney were talking about cross-nursing (when you breastfeed another mom's baby). "[Kourtney] said that in the old days, and maybe we should try this...one sister should babysit all the kids... so I can go out or vice-versa and, you know, whichever sister is babysitting should breastfeed all the kids that are there," Kim tells Today.
"I said, that's what they did back in the day," Kourtney was quick to add. "I didn't say that let's try this. And [Kim] said, does that not freak you out? And I said, no, it doesn't."
It wouldn't be the first time Kim has been freaked out about nursing. A few years ago, she tweeted: "EWW Im at lunch, the woman at the table next 2 me is breast feeding her baby with no coverup then puts baby on the table and changes her diaper [sic]."
Anyway, while the sisters seem to have been joking about cross-nursing, milk sharing, and the use of wet nurses, is on the rise. But that doesn't mean it's totally safe.
The La Leche League League International is against it, as bodily fluids are a way to transmit disease and infections. "Because some individuals may have a viral or bacterial infection but remain asymptomatic (without symptoms) they may never know they are infecting another party," Lois Arnold, M.P.H., CEO of the National Commission on Donor Milk Banking, told iVillage. Proponents of milk sharing, however, say it's an option if it's done safely, including mom health screenings and possible home pasteurization.
Personally? I love my sister, but I would never dream of breastfeeding her baby, or letting her breastfeed my own. In fact, the idea of it kinda shoots a shiver down my spine. I've worn her clothes, shared her food and even borrowed her deodorant, but breastfeeding her baby? I gotta draw the line.
But can you imagine the ratings if the Kardashians did an episode on cross-nursing? I don't know if even the Super Bowl could outperform that one.
