We're not going to pretend to understand Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's relationship. But can we at least acknowledge that they're not like other couples? In a new red carpet interview, Kim talks about how much she loves the father of her baby North. E! News ran the video with this headline: Kim Kardashian Gushes Over Kanye West: He's the "Sweetest Person I've Ever Met in My Entire Life." And yes, technically she did say that. But please, watch the video and tell us there's not something weird about the whole thing.
Okay, so first of all, Kanye is not standing on the red carpet with his fiancee, her sister Khloe and her mother Kris Jenner. Apparently he was seen backstage, taking pictures of Kim like her own personal paparazzo. Which the reporter interprets as... sweet?
"It is the best," Kim says on cue. "He really is the most romantic, sweetest person I've met in my entire life."
And how is taking photos of Kim with his phone romantic, exactly? We're guessing he's not pasting them into a scrapbook along with a bunch of heart stickers. More likely he's documenting her outfit for a future pitch to a fashion designer. Or maybe he just likes looking at her. But then wouldn't it be more romantic to look at actual Kim, not the photos on his phone?
Also note how unenthusiastic Khloe is about this question. She doesn't even crack a smile.
So then the reporter asks if Kim is planning to elope. "No," she says flatly. Then she quickly adds, "Not that I know of, but he is a kind of random, spur-of-the-moment type of guy, so you never know."
Sooo Kanye wouldn't tell Kim in advance if he planned to elope with her? That's interesting.
Next comes the weirdest part of the interview. The reporter asks Kim, "What is the best thing about being a fiancee?" And instead of resuming her gushing about Kanye, she freezes. There is a long pause. Listen closely and you'll hear Kris Jenner coming to the rescue, muttering, "The word. You love the word."
"Yeah!" says Kim enthusiastically, as if this weren't the dumbest possible answer to the question. "I love the word fiancee!"
It's like her script just ran out, and she needed her mom to quick write up some lines.
And maybe that's the best way to describe what seems off about Kimye. Despite her insistence that Kanye is a "spur of the moment type of guy," they never seem to do anything spontaneously. Ever. When they're in the public eye together, it's usually because they're appearing in a new music video or an artistic photo shoot, or a carefully staged event (like the Met Ball).
Which is not to say that Kim and Kanye are faking their relationship. Honestly, since Kim's life is played almost entirely for the cameras, we wouldn't know how to tell if she was faking a relationship. But there's a comfort level that's missing. Considering that Kim and Kanye are both longtime friends and new parents, it doesn't make sense that they seem so ill at ease together.
Of course, if they want to prove us wrong, there is one thing that Kimye can do to convince us their relationship is the real deal: they can release a gag reel from the Bound 2 video shoot. If we can see Kim and Kanye crack up together at the absurdity of their topless motorcycle ride, then we'll have some hope for the future of this engagement.
