Alan Thicke & Other Celebs Slam Kirk Cameron for Anti-Gay Comments

Cameron's Growing Pains dad, Neil Patrick Harris and a bevy of other celebs react to Kirk's belief that homosexuality is "unnatural"

We're not sure how Kirk Cameron's real-life family feels about his controversial views on homosexuality, but the members of his former Growing Pains TV fam certainly aren't the biggest fans. In case you missed it, the former teen heartthrob -- now 41 and an outspoken Evangelical Christian -- ignited a media firestorm on March 2, when he told CNN's Piers Morgan that he believes homosexuality is "unnatural" and that it's detrimental, and ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization."

Not surprisingly, Cameron's anti-gay comments have earned him scores of celebrity detractors, inlcuding his onscreen dad Alan Thicke, 65, who responded with some pointed humor. "I'm getting him some new books. The Old Testament simply can't be expected to explain everything," Thicke tweeted, adding "I love Kirk but I may have to spank him...'tho not in a gay way!"

Tracey Gold, who played Cameron's sister on Growing Pains, found the situation a bit less amusing. "I am a strong supporter of the #LGBT Community," the 42-year-old actress wrote on Twitter, "and I believe in equal rights for all. #NOH8 #LOVE."

Celebrities who weren't on Growing Pains also got in some digs at Cameron. The Good Wife star Josh Charles tweeted, "I know Growing Pains was only a tv show, but I have to think both Alan Thicke & Joanna Kerns must feel they failed as parents tonight."

Neil Patrick Harris twittered, "That Kirk Cameron is hilarious!" while Modern Family's Jesse Tyler Ferguson tweeted, "The only unnatural thing about me being gay is that I had a crush on Kirk Cameron until about 24 hours ago."

And Roseanne Barr wasn't afraid to offer her own blunt assessment: "Kirk or kurt or whatever Cameron is an accomplice to murder with his hate speech," she tweeted.

Debra Messing, Martha Plimpton and Craig Ferguson all added their thoughts into the mix, but there was one celebrity who came out in support of Cameron's comments. Stephen Baldwin, another conservative actor, tweeted, "GREAT JOB Kirk !!! Let's pray one day Piers Morgan finds true Salvation, God Bless!" Seriously, fellas?
