Know the Symptoms

The symptoms of hypothyroidism often develop gradually, becoming worse over time. It may take years before the symptoms become obvious. People with hypothyroidism usually experience fatigue and sluggishness at first, which progresses into unexplained weight gain, an increased sensitivity to cold, and puffiness of the face.

Other symptoms may include:

  • Depression or changes in personality
  • Forgetfulness, difficulty concentrating or confusion
  • Dry, pale, scaly or thick skin
  • Dry hair or hair loss
  • Muscle aches, weakness, or stiffness
  • Joint pain or stiffness
