Kris Humphries may be the beloved newlywed of Kim Kardashian, but once upon a time he wasn't easy to like. The NBA player, 26, didn't make the cut at one prominent college hoops program, because the team thought he was an "absolute jerk."
"He really wanted to come here. But no one on the team liked Kris Humphries," Keith Langford wrote in Beyond the Phog: Untold Stories from Kansas Basketball's Most Dominant Decade, which is excerpted in Yahoo! Sports. "He was arrogant. He told everyone he was going to come in and be the leading scorer as a freshman and that we'd all have to take a backseat to him."
A former guard for the University of Kansas' storied Jayhawks, Langford recounts how Humphries -- then a star player from Minnesota -- visited the program on a recruitment trip and proceeded to talk trash to all the varsity players. Then-coach Roy Williams, however, really wanted Humphries, who'd led his team to a state championship, to enroll.
"But we told him, 'Coach, you can't bring this guy in,'" Langford recalled. "You'd figure Roy would say something like, 'Let's work on him,' or 'Let's give him another chance.' Instead he told Humphries, 'Sorry, you can't come.'"
According to Us, Humphries (who now plays for the New Jersey Nets) still has a less-than-charming streak -- even around his new bride's family. "He's like this weird, big clumsy oaf," a source told Us. "Kris is getting famous for marrying a Kardashian."
