Kristen Stewart: I "Wanted" to Go Topless for 'On the Road'

The actress opens up about doing her first-ever nude scene and says: "I love pushing. I love scaring myself"

If you thought those The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 1 love scenes were sexy, then you haven't seen anything yet. Leading lady Kristen Stewart not only has some hot and heavy sex scenes in her upcoming indie On the Road (based on Jack Kerouac's classic semi-autobiographical book), but she also goes topless in the film.

This will be Stewart's first time doing nudity in a movie, despite the fact she played a young prostitute in Welcome to the Rileys and filmed the previously mentioned love scenes for Breaking Dawn. In a Cannes Film Festival press conference following On the Road's premiere, Stewart admitted that she "wanted to do" the nude scenes.

"I love pushing. I love scaring myself," Stewart told reporters. "I've always wanted to get as close to an experience as I could." (Watch the trailer below for a look at Stewart's performance and a preview of her topless scene.)

She reportedly got very close to the experience of playing a character based on sexually libertated Luanne Henderson, the first wife of Jack Kerouac's friend Neal Cassady (who, in the film is the character of Dean, played by Garrett Hedlund). Stewart described her immersion into Kerouac's world as a month-long "beatnik boot camp" where she and the cast got to know one another in Montreal back in 2010.

"I'm usually self conscious about running around town with my face hanging out," she said. "But I got to live more in those four weeks than I ever usually do in my life."

Director Walter Salles' adaptation of On the Road has been a longtime work in progress for those involved. In fact Stewart, who is now 22, first signed on to the project six years ago.

"I was almost the same age Luanne was at the time," Stewart said of the inspiration for her character, who was 15 when she married Cassady. "But I was a much younger 16, so I'm glad I had a chance to age before we started shooting."

On the Road is slated to hit U.S. theaters later this year.
