Missed iVillage's live Twitterview with Olympic gold medalist and children's book author Kristi Yamaguchi? Never fear, we've got the transcript right here!
As part of the iVillage PBS KIDS Summer Reading Community Challenge, Kristi took a time-out from caring for her daughters Keara, 7, and Emma, 5, (with husband and former pro-hockey player Bret Hedican) to sit down with iVillage for a Twitterview yesterday. Keep reading to find out what the former Dancing with the Stars champ and author of Dream Big, Little Pig! thinks about raising her kids, staying fit -- and her favorite children's books!
@thealigray: You were great on DWTS! If you had to be another reality show, which one would you choose?
@kristiyamaguchi: I think The Amazing Race would be fun -- my husband would want to compete with me.
@ivillage: Besides ice skating, did u write yourself into your character, Poppy?
@kristiyamaguchi: It's not meant to be autobiographical, but did pull from personal experiences. I never sang or modeled, but did do gymnastics & basketball
@ivillage: What was your favorite book as a kid?
@kristiyamaguchi: I loved Dr. Seuss -- Green Eggs and Ham was a favorite
@ivillage: Do your daughters know that their parents are famous?
@kristiyamaguchi: They sometimes ask why people seem to know us. The older one doesn't seem to care, but Emma is silly about it sometimes -- like points us out
@ivillage: What celebrity would you like to see next on dancing with the stars?
@kristiyamaguchi: Hmmm, how about seeing Oprah take on a new challenge:)
@jessicaesquire: What's it like to reinvent yourself from figure skater to author?
@kristiyamaguchi: It wasn't too much a stretch since it is a story about a skater. I studied a lot of children's books-easy bcuz of 2 little one's @ home
@jennifermerritt: How do you find time for fitness with two kids?
@kristiyamaguchi: I try to workout out after I drop them off @ school. Also, do workouts @ home(Power Workout dvd:) & they sometimes join me
@inwoodfan: Hi @kristiyamaguchi & @iVillage! Kristi, are you still involved with US figure skating in any way? Do you skate for fun?
@kristiyamaguchi: I am part of their mentoring program for the younger skaters. I love supporting USFSA whenever possible. I skate for fun w/ my kids
@maryellen_m: What are your girls' favorite bedtime stories? #ivillagekristi
@kristiyamaguchi: They love The most Precious Thing, Today I Feel Silly, getting into Junie B-the older one, My Father's Dragon
@ivillage: Do you see ur competitive spirit in ur daughters? Does it cause sibling rivalry?
@kristiyamaguchi: They aren't competitive w/ each other yet. The younger one is much more competitive athletically than our older one.
@ashleebeggs: Hi Kristi, are you going to be turning this book into a series? p.s. love the skating piggy!
@kristiyamaguchi: Yes! Poppy's 2nd book is due out Spring 2012. Another fun adventure:)
@ivillage: How did you pick your daughters' names?
@kristiyamaguchi: Keara was suggested from my friend and we liked it w/ Kiyomi(her middle name) & Emma we just loved...
@kellywallacetv: Are ur daughters interested in figure skating? Would u be happy if they wanted 2 skate professionally?
@kristiyamaguchi: They like to skate for fun. I don't see them being passionate about it yet, but if either chose, I'd support them
@kellywallacetv: How do u balance wanting to expose ur kids to things (i.e. skating) & not wanting to push them to do it?
@kristiyamaguchi: I try to give them choices on things to try, once they start, I try to encourage them to give it their best...
@kristiyamaguchi: I don't want them to quit right away, but if it's a constant battle, it probably isn't a fit for them.
@pc_lasvegas: What was your greatest obstacle to realizing your dream, what /who helped you overcome it?
@kristiyamaguchi: I got overwhelmed from outside pressures & felt so negative. Kurt Browning (world champ) gave me some perspective as..
@kristiyamaguchi: ...well as my coach Christy Ness.
@katiezapata: What's on TV at your house? #ivillagekristi
@kristiyamaguchi: Grey's Anatomy, SVU, Glee, Hawaii 5-0. Thank goodness for DVR!
@ivillage: Thanks so much to @kristiyamaguchi for joining us today!!! You can buy her kids' book "Dream Big, Little Pig!" here.
@kristiyamaguchi: Thank you @iVillage for having me! So many great (tough) questions from your followers! All the best!
