Lady Gaga's Cocaine Comment Irks Boy George

The '80s pop icon takes issue with Gaga's recent remarks in Vanity Fair about "occasional" drug use

In a shockingly candid interview for the upcoming Vanity Fair, Lady Gaga, 24, admitted to doing "occasional" drugs, "mostly cocaine," "maybe a couple times a year." Our iVillage readers didn't seem surprised at Gaga's confession, but she managed to shock one of her famous fans: Boy George. In his blog for Paper Magazine, the '80s pop icon questioned Gaga's motives in sharing her recreational drug habits.

Why offer this information up on a whim? writes the Culture Club singer. Could it be that her use of coke is not so 'occasional'? As a recovering addict who knows how dangerous 'occasional' use is, I can think of no reason for Gaga to reveal this to her young audience.

Boy George, 49, is speaking from experience: he fought a heroin addiction during the peak of his fame in the '80s, was arrested several times on drug-related charges, and went to rehab for cocaine in 2006. He seems worried that Gaga is repeating his own tragic history -- and quotes his own mother as evidence.

My mum had the best take on this: "she's reached the stage where she feels untouchable, you all get there -- you did, son." I can't argue with that!

Boy George also points out that Gaga "has seemed almost annoyingly professional and focused" so far in her career, and that bragging about her cocaine use "seems out of character."

We're not so sure that the confession is out of character: Gaga's M.O. is to shock people, and the interview just seems like one more way to push the envelope. In a way, it could even be considered brave to admit to occasional cocaine use, when most stars who partake would never come clean tot he press. However, it's impossible not to notice that Lady Gaga seems to be slipping lately (and not just at the airport). First there were those fainting incidents during concerts (which may or may not be related to lupus), then her drunk and belligerent ballgame appearances, and most recently, her nearly-nude crowd-surfing at Lollapalooza. For somebody who's usually a master at manipulating her image, Gaga seems a little out of control these days. And the idea of "occasional" cocaine use is pretty sketchy in the first place. So maybe Boy George is right, and she needs to reign in the partying. What do you think?
