Lady Gaga Donates $1 Million to Hurricane Sandy Relief

The New York City native donated to the Red Cross to help the New York area recover because without the city, she says "I would not be the woman or artist that I am today"

With hundreds of thousands in New York and New Jersey still without power after Hurricane Sandy and now dealing with a nor’easter that has dumped wet snow on the region, native daughter Lady Gaga is donating $1 million to relief efforts.

Gaga, who grew up on Manhattan's Upper West Side, announced her pledge to the American Red Cross on her Little Monsters website.

"Today I pledge 1 million dollars to New York & The American Red Cross for Hurricane Sandy Relief," the 26-year-old singer wrote. "If it wasn't for NYC: the Lower Eastside, Harlem, the Bronx and Brooklyn, I would not be the woman or artist that I am today."

"New York is relentless ambition, a drive to succeed, a place where there is a natural pursuit of diversity through compassion," added Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta.

"Please accept this gift on behalf of myself, my parents Joe and Cynthia, and my sister Natali; with our deepest gratitude New York for raising us. Thank you for helping me build my spirit. I will now help you rebuild yours. Sincerely, Lady Gaga and The Germanottas."

Despite Gaga's generosity, her donation may not soften one of her vocal critics. In September, Staten Island Borough President James Molinari, called Gaga a "slut" and criticized her for smoking marijuana during a concert in Amsterdam.

Staten Island has been one of Hurricane Sandy's worst-hit areas. Last Thursday, Molinari angrily criticized the American Red Cross for what he described as a feeble relief effort. He even called on Staten Islanders to donate to other charities. Gaga, it seems, hasn't taken his advice.
