Sunday night at the Grammys, Lady Gaga was reborn from a "vessel" she claims to have stayed in for three days prior to the awards. But the 24-year-old fashion icon opted for another symbolic costume Thursday morning, when she wore a "latex-condom-inspired outfit" to her interview on Good Morning America.
"We're here to talk about safe sex, so (picking out this outfit) was quite easy," the "Born This Way" singer told Robin Roberts. "Today I really wanted to head-to-toe be representative of what we women and people all over the world need to be concerned about, which is the leading cause of death for women -- HIV."
The politically active pop star isn't new to promoting social justice. She and Cyndi Lauper partnered with MAC Cosmetics in 2010 for their Viva Glam campaign, which encourages women to practice safe sex, and helps raise funds to fight AIDS. Gaga is also an outspoken gay rights advocate and was instrumental in the repeal of the controversial "don't ask, don't tell" bill.
Gaga said she hopes to raise $50 million for AIDS research and relief through the lipsticks she's designed for MAC this year. "Speak with your friends, your parents... all the loved ones in your life... about safe sex, about protection, because (HIV) is 100 percent a disease (that) we can protect and prevent, but it's zero percent curable." Gaga doesn't shy away from touchy topics, and she hopes parents will discuss safe sex and AIDS prevention with their children. "It is a shame and stigma around those things that discourages people from learning more about safe sex," she said. She thanked her own mother for teaching her many things about life and being open with her from a young age.
Gaga's new album Born This Way hits stores May 23. As outlandish as her outfits might be, we're totally on board with the message she's promoting!
