Justin Bieber who? While Biebs reportedly broke the record for the most widespread social media message (in honor of his 18th birthday) last week, Lady Gaga is the undisputed ruler of the Twitterverse. The 25-year-old music icon crossed a major Twitter milestone this week by becoming the first celebrity to clock in at more than 20 million followers. And there I was being happy with 500!
At the time of writing, Gaga had 20,181,685 followers on her Twitter account. She still hasn't commented on reaching the landmark, but she'll probably eventually post something along the lines of what she wrote when she hit 19 million followers: "HOLY HOOKER!!! *goes back to work*"
Mother Monster's massive number of followers gives her a sizeable soap box to stand on while preaching her message of unconditional love to her Little Monsters.
The singer recently launched the Born This Way Foundation to combat bullying and empower her young fans, and her Twitter account is a great way to advocate support of it. Gaga also has her hands in various charitable organizations, so she can definitely use her Twitter powers for good.
Still, she's got some stiff competition in the fans department. Bieber was clocking in at 18,138,934 Twitter followers at the time this was published, while Katy Perry has 15,781,361, Shakira has 14,586,220 and Rihanna has 14,529,869. All those pop stars have put our president to shame, too, as Barack Obama only has 12,855,790 followers. Again, I'm happy with my 500.
