Lady Gaga Hits the Mother Lode with 25 Million Twitter Followers!

Mother Monster beats out Justin Bieber to become the first Twitter user to crack the 25-million follower milestone on Wednesday

Lady Gaga isn't just the Mother Monster -- she's got the mother of all Twitter accounts. On Wednesday night, the pop star became the first person ever to reach 25 million followers. Now that her "little monsters" exceed the population of Australia, does Gaga need to find them a new name?

"#25milliontweetymonsters wow! I'm officially feeling like the luckiest girl in the world today. Last sold out show in Singapore in 2 hrs!" Gaga, 26, tweeted from her Southeast Asian tour.

It was one year ago that Lady Gaga had her first major Twitter coup, beating out Justin Bieber in the race to 10 million followers. Since then, she's kept up a steady lead, reaching 20 million this March (again, with The Biebs in second place). You'd think that the gap might have closed a bit now that Justin has a new album coming out, but you'd be wrong: Bieber is now trailing Gaga by nearly 4 million followers.

How has Gaga held onto her No. 1 spot despite Justin's millions of Beliebers? It's not volume; she sends out about 1 tweet for every 15 that Justin writes. More likely, it's that she's very savvy about how she uses the social media service. When something goes down, like the recent concert cancellation in Indonesia, she's much more likely to address fans' concerns directly over Twitter than via a press release. She also has a history of tweeting exclusive content for fans, like early access to new singles and sneak peeks at photo shoots. If you want to know what's going on with Gaga, then following her on Twitter is the simply the easiest way to find out.

As for the rest of the Twitter Top 10, only Bieber and Katy Perry have crossed the 20-million threshold. Close behind is Rihanna, currently the No. 4 Twitter user, with 19,690,578 followers. Britney Spears, Shakira, Barack Obama, Kim Kardashian, Taylor Swift and YouTube -- yes, YouTube -- round out the list.

Could any of them beat Gaga to the 30 million mark? We doubt it, but we're keeping an eye on YouTube. Never underestimate the power of cute kitten videos!
