When it comes to MTV's Video Music Awards, it's best to expect the unexpected (recall that little Kanye West/Taylor Swift moment last year?). And the same could certainly be said for Lady Gaga. So it's only fitting that the outrageous pop star has more nominations than anyone else this year -- and more than any artist in VMA history!
Yes, Lady Gaga has scored a record-breaking 13 nominations for her attention-grabbing videos. The singer, 24, is named in categories like best female video and best pop video, but most notably, she's up the biggest award of the night -- video of the year -- for which her "Bad Romance" is a contender. And Gaga's doubly nominated for video of the year, because her Beyoncé collaboration, "Telephone," also scored a nod in the prestigious category. (Meanwhile, her controversial "Alejandro" video got no love.)
Gaga's reaction to the news was elation, according to People. "I'm so honored for all the little monsters and self-professed freaks of the universe, to have more VMA nominations in a single year than any artist in MTV history," she said. "Ironically, I'm even more proud it's an unlucky number: 13."
Gaga added, "God put me on Earth for three reasons: To make loud music, gay videos and cause a damn raucous. Thank you, MTV!"
While Lady Gaga is already celebrating, fellow honoree Eminem is griping! Well, not entirely seriously. Reacting to his eight nominations, the rapper gave this exclusive statement to EW.com: "Apparently, MTV doesn’t care that I have two massive stadium shows on the other side of the country the day after the VMA’s. F me, right?!? I mean, I’ll be there but don’t expect me to be nice about it."
Other notable nominees include Jared Leto's band 30 Seconds to Mars (up for best rock video), teen sensation Justin Bieber (up for best new artist), Katy Perry's sugary summer hit "California Gurls," and Enrique Iglesias' "I Like It" video featuring the cast of Jersey Shore.
