Look out, Madonna: Lady Gaga is firing back! After enduring months of insults from the Material Girl, Gaga finally gave Madonna a piece of her mind during Tuesday's concert in Helsinki, Finland.
"I don’t give a f**k what people say," the "Born This Way" singer told the crowd of 13,000 fans. "We don’t give a f**k -- we know the truth."
Okay, so she didn't mention Madonna by name. How do we know she was talking about the "Girl Gone Wild" singer? Well -- after she said it, Gaga flashed her thong a la Madonna on her MDMA Tour. Then the pop star launched into a cover of the 1989 Madonna hit "Like A Prayer." So much for subtlety!
By covering Madge's single, Gaga recalled the time that Madonna snubbed her in concert this past spring. In May, Madonna raised eyebrows by performing a pointed mash-up of her own "Express Yourself," Gaga's sound-alike hit "Born This Way," and Madonna's 2008 song "She's Not Me."
But that wasn't the only time that Madonna belittled Lady Gaga. In an interview last September, the older diva refused to acknowledge comparisons to Lady Gaga, saying, "I have no comment on her obsessions related to me." Madonna was barely any kinder when speaking to 20/20 in January, stating that her influence on Gaga was "obvious" and that "Born This Way" was a "reductive" imitation of her work. (Geez, you'd think that Gaga had given her hydrangeas or something.)
Despite all the insults, Gaga never said a bad word about Madonna. Nonetheless, her friend Elton John felt the need to come to Gaga's defense. "(Madonna) has been horrible to Gaga," John complained in an August interview, calling Madonna a "fairground stripper" whose "career is over."
Now that Gaga has retaliated against Madge, is a full-blown feud about to explode? It doesn't seem likely. While Madonna has had plenty of spats with fellow celebs over the years, Gaga seems like she'd rather avoid conflict. As she tweeted last Friday, "When did celebrities become such bullies? #BeGrateful#We'reAllEqual." Not sure Madonna would agree with that last part...
