Lance Bass: "I Was Completely Asexual" During *NSync

The former boy-bander explains why he hid his homosexuality during the height of his fame

Lance Bass knew that he would have to become a female heartthrob if he wanted *NSync to be a success. That's why no one close to him had any idea he was gay when he was a member of the hit boy band.

In a new interview with Ricki Lake, Bass, 33, opens up about hiding his sexuality during the height of his popularity. He says he "knew from 4 years old" that he was gay, but it was something that he couldn't share because of his time in the spotlight and the conflicting messages in his religion.

"I didn’t tell a single person when I was with *NSync, I didn’t tell a friend a family member nothing like that," he says. "As long as I was with *NSync, I didn’t date a guy, I was completely asexual."

Bass describes himself as a Christian, but admits that his religion (combined with growing up in Mississippi) made it hard for him to accept his sexuality.

"I grew up very religious -- and I still am religious -- I still am a Christian … but there's a lot of conflicting messages, and it's just confusion," he says.

Now Bass realizes that it's better to be out and proud and set a good example for those like him than to hide who he really is for the sake of fame.

"I would rather be in a position where I could help other people than be the biggest superstar in the world and pretend to be straight," Bass admits.

This interview airs in its entirety tomorrow on The Ricki Lake Show.
