The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

Yes, it's a prison movie, but without rioting or the kind of violence the genre might suggest. Instead, this touching, heartbreaking, but ultimately uplifting film (based on a Stephen King novella) tells the story of two men -- played by Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman -- who forge a friendship that enables them to survive life-sentence imprisonment. It's funny and sad, and filled with little twists you won't see coming, but take the word "redemption" literally. Robbins' Andy Dufresne weathers everything that comes his way, good and bad, with a quiet dignity that suggests he knows something no one else knows, which, as it turns out, he very definitely does.
