Learning from Our Mistakes: A Mother's Day Story - iVillage

I remember a great number of special times with my Mom, for a variety of reasons....but the one which so easily comes to mind these days, as I reflect on the passions in my life, is a funny memory.

I love to cook. To experiment with different foods and discover new recipes, is one of my many passions. And it all started with Mom....

I remember the first time she let me cook dinner for the family. It was a simple meal, with macaroni and cheese being the dish she let me cook. As I got the macaroni into the boiling water, I thought, "This is easy".....then as I added the cheese sauce mix, I thought, "This doesn't look right"....I had missed the part about draining the water after the macaroni was done!!! This is where Mom came to the rescue. Instead of having our veggies on the side of macaroni and cheese, Mom made macaroni and cheese soup for the family out of my mistake.....and taught me that when you make a mistake, it doesn't have to be the end of the world....you make adjustments every day of your life, the secret is to keep your head on straight and work your way through-who knows, you may even discover something better because of it!

Thanks to my Mom, Barbara Campbell, for giving me a passion for cooking, and showing me how to think on my feet!
