Mel Gibson, Leonardo DiCaprio Start Viking Trend

Forget vampires. Forget werewolves. We have seen the future, and it is... Vikings!

Leonardo DiCaprio has just announced plans to star in a new Viking-themed movie directed by Mel Gibson. Little else is known about the movie, except that it will be "heavily submerged in Viking culture." (And that Leo would look super-cute in one of those horned helmets.)

This announcement comes in the wake of two other planned Viking movies. First, there's the Dreamworks animated film, How to Train Your Dragon, due in March. Based on the young adult novel, it's about a Viking teen who fights dragons until he befriends an injured fire-breather. (You can watch the trailer here.) Then there's Thor, the unlikely superhero movie directed by Kenneth Branagh and starring Natalie Portman. Set to open in 2011, it's about a Norse god-turned-ordinary-dude who must defend the world against supernatural Scandanavian bad guys.

That makes three, and as we all know, three's a trend. So if your kid wants to be Erik the Red next Halloween instead of Jack Sparrow... well, don't say we didn't warn you.

Plus: Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt Jump on Vampire Train
