Lindsay Lohan: I'm Not Cutting Myself

We all know Lindsay Lohan is not having the happiest winter, what with the recent deaths of friends Brittany Murphy and Casey Johnson (and that's on top of her astonishingly dysfunctional parents and erratic love life). But is it possible she's dealing with pain by inflicting harm on herself?

A new paparazzi photo released by Radar shows Lohan with a cut on her inner arm, causing speculation that the star of 2004's Mean Girls has been cutting. "Her cutting and hurting herself" is an issue her mom Dina Lohan raised in a leaked phone conversation back in November. The hard-partying starlet has also been photographed in the past with noticeable slashes on her arms. Is it what many experts on "cutting" consider the behavior -- a cry for help?

No way, Lohan told gossip blogger Perez Hilton about the recent snapshot. "I've had that scar on my arm for a very long time now -- it's funny it's just being noticed. I had surgery a while ago for an injury I had when I was younger, nothing having to do with depression or anything of the sort. Now back off, people! There are more important world issues to focus on!"

For Lohan's sake, we hope that's the true explanation. Cutting is most common among teenage girls -- as many as 1 in every 200 -- but can continue into a woman's 20's or 30's, especially if she's dealing with trauma. Cutters claim the habit offers physical release from emotional pain; meanwhile, recovered cutters and those who know them have said it's akin to other methods of self-harm, such as anorexia or drug abuse. If you know someone with a cutting habit, go here and here for information, and here for resources to help them stop. And if Lindsay Lohan is, indeed, engaging in this self-destructive habit, we only hope she'll find her way to helpful resources, too.
