Lindsay Lohan's much-anticipated debut as Elizabeth Taylor in Lifetime's Liz & Dick was the Twitter event of Thanksgiving weekend 2012. The Nov. 25 premiere of the biopic made-for-TV movie was accompanied by a stream of live commentary on Twitter from celebrities, critics and regular folks alike, such as comedians Patton Oswalt and Kathy Griffin, singer Aimee Mann and actress Mae Whitman.
Admittedly, most of what the Twitterverse wasn't very kind -- but LiLo did have one very famous supporter. "@lindsaylohan you did a beautiful job on Liz & Dick," Lady Gaga posted after most critics had panned the performance. "Let no one bring u down, Liz didn't, they always try to knock the greats down a few pegs."
Read on to see what some snarkier stars had to say about #LizandDick. And for those who missed the first showing, the encore is tonight at 8 p.m. ET.
Rachel Dratch: "I've an unhealthy level of excitement for #lizanddick. Treating w/the reverence usually reserved for an old-school 70's 'television event.'"
Patton Oswalt: "Dear @lindsaylohan: I give you permission to Tweet me to smithereens when I do Lifetime's CHAZ BONO: THE CRUELEST CUT in March. #lizanddick"
Kathy Griffin: "Richard Burton just called Liz's fingers "pudgy digits". The "n word" of its day. Edgy."
Elizabeth Meriwether: "She fainted! Oh my god. I think that was the funniest thing I've seen in TV in a while and I write comedy for television."
Mae Whitman: "I want to kill them already :-( #lizanddick"
Adam Shankman: "They r doing a marvelous job of making one of the greatest actresses of all time out to be one of the worst people of all time. #LizandDick"
Aimee Mann: "I get the feeling the phrase "It is what it is" was said a lot in the editing room. #lizanddick"
Donal Logue: "God I pray #LizandDick is such a ratings success in an ironic way that Lifetime immediately goes into production of #Liz&MJ beyond neverland"
James Poniewozik (Time television critic): "All of you livetweeting LIZ & DICK and swelling its ratings will have yourselves to thank for "The Situation is... JAMES DEAN""
Patton Oswalt (again): "All of Twitter is staggering away from the LIZ & DICK viewing like the audience at Altamont."
