How do I get my ferret to use his litter box?
With larger cages, many have problems getting their ferret to use the proper spot. The problem is even worse with two-, three- or four-story cages -- so many corners to choose from. It is common for a ferret to wake up and run to the first corner he sees to potty in. If you have a cage with more than one level, it may only take adding a litter box to each level. If you just have a basic one-level cage, the problem is much easier to solve. First of all, make sure the ferret's bedding, food and water are not too close to the litter box. Many ferrets won't use the litter box because these things are too close and they are neat freaks -- and after all, I don't think most of us would want to eat or sleep around our bathrooms either. A good rule is to place the litter box in the corner the ferret seems to like most, then set the food in another corner, then the bedding in another corner and the water in the last corner. Lastly, don't forget persistence. When you see your ferret about to potty in the wrong place, pick him up and put him in the right spot. The more you catch him and put him in the litter box, the faster he's going to catch on. You can also place a little of his stool in the litter box to help him get the idea. --CL-jacybaby
