|Whatever we think we know about new technology, chances are our kids know more. On the flip side of that coin, they also want what everyone else has, and the devices they're begging for may not be worth the hype. We found five hot wireless gadgets that live up to their claims, and some that even go above and beyond. |
1. Sidekick II from T-Mobile
The Sidekick II is an all-in-one communication device. It's a cell phone that features instant messaging, Web surfing, email, a camera, a speakerphone and a built-in organizer. While it may be digital overkill for the under-12 set, it's a great pick for the teenager or college student who needs to stay connected on the go.
Price: About $250. T-Mobile is currently offering a $50 mail-in rebate. Find out more at the T-Mobile Website.
2. Tamagotchi Connection(tm) from Bandai
The new Tamagotchi is the same virtual pet of the 1990s, with a few more bells and whistles. The updated version allows kids to connect with other Tamagotchi owners and set up virtual play dates for the pets. So if your child is nagging you for a new pet but you know she runs around too much to take care of a real one, put a Tamagotchi in her holiday stocking.
Price: About $14.99. Available at most toy retailers. Find out more at the Tamagotchi Connection.
3. iPod from Apple
Sure, kids may want an iPod for the music, but did you know it can also be a great learning tool? Your child can record class lectures and play them back later for study purposes, or download audiobooks or foreign-language lessons. With a few simple tweaks, the iPod can also double as an alarm clock and calendar. (Maybe THAT will get them out of bed on time!)
