Don’t reach your hungry point. As a mom, I’m always on the go and making sure that my daughters are fed. But in the past, I’d forget about feeding myself! I would suddenly be starving and would reach for the easiest junk food I could get my hands on or settle for a handful of my girls’ crackers. On the Jenny Craig program, my consultant taught me how to meal plan and to always have fresh fruit and vegetables cut and ready to go so that I would never go hungry. I now always keep baby carrots and cucumbers in little Ziploc bags in my purse and in the fridge for snacking on when I get hungry, just to take the edge off. My girls see me pull them out of my purse for a snack and now love to snack on them with me! They are picking up my healthy habits now, and choose to snack on vegetables instead of crackers and cookies…I know, it sounds crazy, but it’s true!
Satisfy your sweet tooth. Deprivation doesn’t work for me, so I need to have a sweet after I finish my dinner. I always keep my freezer stocked with sugar-free popsicles for an evening snack, especially when it is hot out to cool me off instead of grabbing a heaping bowl of ice cream! About an hour after I’m done with dinner, I reach for a popsicle and feel satisfied.
Workout together. When I first started Jenny Craig, I wasn’t sure how to even get started working out with two small children, but my consultant told me to start small. First, I only did a couple of days a week. Now, I’ve learned to make exercise part of a daily habit for me. Both of my girls will get involved in my exercise routines and it is not only fun to watch, but they can get active and burn off some energy as well (yay for sleeping through the night!). I usually do a 30-minute cardio video 5-6 days a week, and then I finish up with a 10-minute toning video that alternates focusing on my stomach, lower body and upper body. In the summer, I take my girls for wagon rides for at least a mile, usually 2 to 3 times a week, so I get an extra cardio workout there, too.
Get it to go. One of my biggest problems before losing the weight was portion control. I didn’t really know what a proper portion size was to properly fuel my body. When we’d go out to eat a restaurant, I’d finish what was on my plate, and I never thought about how restaurants usually serve 2 to 4 times what a proper portion size should be. One trick my consultant taught me was to ask for a to-go box when I order my food. That way, I divide my entrée in-half, put the other half in the to-go box for tomorrow and then I can still finish what’s on my plate.
