I was on the plane for my final trip to Los Angeles before the New Year. I was already a bit worn down because I had been working like a lunatic. I am happy to say the salon has been incredibly busy. Everyone wants to be sure to look their best for the holidays and at all the festivities that surround them. That means the world as I know it has stopped by the salon for their hair colors, hairstyles, keratin and conditioning treatments. Let me not fail to mention the constant stream of facials, manicures, pedicures and makeup applications by the famous Enid'O. Who knew the color of tips, toes, lipstick and eye shadows were so important? By the way, these make great inexpensive gifts that women love to receive. Shampoos, conditioners and styling products are also great affordable stocking stuffers that both men and women will be sure to use.
Being the luckiest guy in the world, I have also been making more appearances on the Today show than I could ever have possibly imagined. We have an upcoming "Ambush Hour" that we have been working on for weeks. Wait until you see it. It will air December 27 and I think it's going to be great. I am grateful and thrilled, but sometimes I must admit I do start to feel like I'm running on empty.
Today was one of those days. I had just finished the third of a three-day shoot for the Today show. That means I had three 4:30 a.m. wake-ups in a row. The minute I go off camera, it's time for me to go to my day job at the salon, where I always have to look good. It's part of my job. After all, I do spend every day at a beauty salon, where I spend all day talking about the importance of looking good. So I have no excuses! I have to practice what I preach.
This morning, I did my usual "ambush makeover" of myself -- I changed out of my suit, and went to the airport. Everything was smooth sailing as I checked in, got my upgrade and even had time to have lunch. While waiting for the departure at the gate, I answered a few texts and emails, only to find out that my 1:20 p.m. flight had been delayed until 6 p.m. That meant I would land about 12:30 a.m. New York time. I thought I was going to slit my wrist.
Once again, being the luckiest man on the planet, I was able to be wait-listed on a 3 p.m. flight and managed to get on the plane because I am a platinum executive la-de-dah flyer. Who says biweekly coast-to-coast trips don't pay off? So what if I have developed a twitch now and then. I happily got on the plane.
The reason I am going on and on is that we all feel the pressure of the holidays in our own way. We all have a to-do list that seems endless and just a few days left to take care of everything. I know at this very moment you are thinking it's impossible to finish, but you are wrong. You will make it all happen. I am not suggesting that it doesn't take endless work and determination. I just believe that it's important to try your hardest to accomplish all you can and then let go and enjoy this potentially wonderful time of the year.
Not to sound like a grinch, but I do think it is important to make yourself a priority. Put yourself on top of your list. I'm not talking about buying yourself diamonds or a gold Rolex. I am only suggesting that you pay extra attention to your appearance. Make sure you look your best. If this means a few extra hours at the beauty salon or a "time out" for at-home beauty treatments, make the time. No one wants their colleagues, friends or loved ones to look tired and worn. Somehow every aspect of your life will converge now. You will most likely spend time with your family, friends and co-workers in the next few weeks. Look great! Look happy! Spread the spirit and joy of the season! Have a happy holiday!
