Lumpy gravy

While you're in the middle of thickening your gravy, the doorbell rings. As you go to answer the door, the gravy continues to bubble away on the stove. Instead of becoming a beautifully smooth and velvety sauce, it’s suspended with lumps of flour that won’t dissolve no matter how hard you whisk.

Solution: Before giving up and going with the store-bought variety, try straining the gravy in a fine-mesh sieve or pouring the gravy into a blender and pureeing until smooth. Both methods should take out all of the lumps.
