While we're all still trying to digest Mackenzie Phillips' shocking claims that she and her dad, John Phillips of the '60s group The Mamas and The Papas, had a sexual relationship for 10 years, the former child star's family is also reacting to the news.
Mac's stepmother, Genevieve Waite, released a statement to the Oprah Winfrey Show, immediately after Mackenzie appeared to tell her story and promote her new book, High on Arrival.
"I am stunned by Mackenzie's terrible allegations about her father," Genevieve said. "I would often complain about her overly familiar attitudes towards him, and he said it was just her way. John was a good man. … He was incapable, no matter how drunk or drugged he was, to have sexual relations with his own child."
In a statement to CNN.com, John's second wife, actress Michelle Phillips, said, "McKenzie's drug addiction for 35 years has been the result of many unpleasant experiences. Whether her relationship with her father is delusional or not, it is an unfortunate circumstance and very hurtful for our entire family."
Finally, Chynna Phillips, Mac's half-sister and a member of the '90s group Wilson-Phillips told Us Weekly how she reacted when Mackenzie revealed her incestuous relationship with their father to her in 1997.
"She said, 'I don't know why, but I just really felt the need to call you and tell you something that I think you need to know,'" Chynna said of the conversation she had with Mac more than a decade ago. "And she went on to tell me that she had had an incestuous relationship with our dad for about 10 years."
"Somebody could have dropped a piano on my head and I probably wouldn't have felt it," the singer told the mag. "But I knew it was true. I mean, who in their right mind would make such a claim if it wasn't true?" She says the news sent her into "a deep, deep sadness and depression for about 10 days. A part of me died when I found out."
What an awful ordeal for the family to go through, especially since John is no longer alive to confirm or deny the accusations. But, again, like Chynna said, why would anyone make up such a horrific story?
