At 51, Madonna is in better shape than most of us will ever be in our lives. The Material Girl (though no longer a girl) has arms to rival Michelle Obama, a face that still sells magazines and shapelier legs than Lady Gaga. But apparently, there's one aging feature that Madonna hasn't been able to disguise: her "granny hands." According to the U.K.'s Mirror, Madonna is having a procedure called scierotherapy -- around $3,000 worth of injections -- to reduce the appearance of bulging veins in her hands. Sources say that she refuses to allow her hands to be photographed until the injections take, thus explaining her recent penchant for gloves.
Of course, we don't know if the story is true. Celebrities of Madonna's caliber rarely admit to cosmetic surgery, even when it's obvious -- like Madge's alleged 2008 facelift, which was noteworthy enough to inspire a cover story in New York Magazine. But it's clear to anybody paying attention that Madonna is doing something to turn back the clock. The "granny hands" story reminds us of those 2006 reports that Demi Moore had $9,000 worth of surgery to disguise the sagging skin on her knees -- one of the only places on her body that actually looked middle-aged. Again, we can't confirm that it's true. But indeed, Moore, 47, looks younger than she did in her 20's.
And it makes us wonder: When does it end? Madonna can afford all the cutting-edge surgical procedures in the world, but at some point, she has to acknowledge that she's no longer 20. The telltale signs of aging are simply never going to disappear entirely. Besides, it's not like we don't know how old she is. Nobody can keep their age a secret in the digital era.
Madonna has always been a master of transformation and trendsetting; just in the last decade, she went from electro-pop diva to Kabbalah guru to storybook-writing Supermom. For a while, she was even faux-British. So for her next trick, we'd love to see her embrace aging with the same zeal that she recently brought to third-world adoption and her record-setting "Sticky and Sweet" tour. If anybody can make getting old sexy (besides Helen Mirren), it's definitely Madonna.
