If you missed Saturday Night Live this weekend, you missed one of the most shocking moments the show has had in awhile. Even if you did watch, you might not have initially realized that, yes, that woman with the 20-something body was actually the real 51-year-old Madonna.
Madonna, whose appearance on the show was unannounced, surprised viewers by doing a skit that appeared to be a spoof of her and the night's scheduled musical guest, Lady Gaga. But, in fact, it was the real deal -- if a humorous version of it.
Her nubile body and taut skin aside, there were two reasons some (this writer included) mistook the real Madge for a Madonna impersonator. One, she seemed to stumble on her signature dance moves -- which some speculate was intentional, though her apparent flubbing of lines was probably not. And two, she didn't seem to mind being clobbered and almost kissed by the woman some have said is a Madonna rip-off (that would be current pop-chart queen Lady Gaga).
The self-parodying ladies did a little dance together, which evolved into a catfight, and then an almost-kiss that was reminiscent of her kiss with Britney Spears on the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards. After a hair-pulling tussle across the lap of the faux-MTV show's host, the kiss seemed imminent. As the two women slowly moved towards each other with puckered lips, they instead planted their smackers on the cheeks of the fake show's host, played by Kenan Thompson.
Oh, another thing that might have been overshadowed by Madonna's surprise cameo: In her performance of "Paparazzi," Lady Gaga clearly sung the S-word , which is usually bleeped out. Now Jenny Slate doesn't have to feel so bad for saying the F-word during her debut as an SNL cast member.
