We adore quirky-cool Maggie Gyllenhaal and her cute hubby Peter Sarsgaard. We weren't surprised when they named their first child Ramona -- an offbeat name that seemed perfectly suited to a couple of indie actors (and a new mama who, like many of us, probably grew up reading Beverly Cleary books). But the couple welcomed their second daughter on April 19th, and we're, err, confused by their latest baby-name choice: Gloria Ray.
We love granny-chic baby names here at iVillage, but Gloria is a little more granny than granny-chic. So we're wondering: Is it a family name? A way to honor the "G" in Gyllenhaal? And we're not sure where Ray comes from, although it could be a nod to her maternal grandmother, Ruth.
Not that the couple would have chosen a name because the rest of the world likes it, but Gloria has dropped in favor on the Social Security Administration's list of popular baby names -- it's currently at 503, sandwiched between Melina (number 502) and Jaelynn (number 504) and having fallen from number 358 in 2000.
Still, we like that their new little girl will have a normal name that she won't have to struggle to spell or answer questions about for the rest of her life. Congrats, Maggie, Peter and Ramona -- and welcome little Gloria!
