Makeup, Menopause & Very Dry Skin -Dilemma of the Week

I'm a 58-year-old menopausal woman with very dry skin and my makeup just doesn't lie smoothly. Is there anything you can suggest to help me?

I hear you! As our skin changes, so too should our skin and makeup routines. My first suggestion is that you invest in a high-quality intensive moisturizer. I suggest one containing topical Vitamin C and alpha lipoic acid, which work to treat and repair skin cells.

Begin by moisturizing! To sustain the benefit, apply your moisturizer immediately after cleansing your skin, while it is still damp. Next, always apply sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of at least 15 when headed outdoors.

Regarding makeup: Use formulas created specifically for very dry skin. (Most are marked "dry skin formula" or something similar.) There exist an array of creamy foundations, shadows and blushes to choose from; these non-powder formulas will work best for you. Not only are they incredibly easy to apply (you can actually do everything with your fingers), they also give you the option of easily mixing in extra moisturizer if needed.

As for powder, use it conservatively or not at all. Instead, try using blotting papers, which absorb shine without leaving a trace of cosmetic.

Women in menopause should keep in mind that oral or topical estrogen therapies can also help maintain your skin's health and appearance, so speak to your gynecologist.
