Vancouver-based Steve Venegas and his wife have embarked on a seriously funny project. Steve goes into local Gap stores, tries on the exact same outfit as one of the mannequins, and poses with it. His wife takes the photos, which range from super serious (dummy face) to silly (someone is standing outside of the frame laughing at him as he cracks up).
Why do this project? Steve told us, "I started taking the photos because I thought it would be funny. The mannequins at the Gap have a very specific look, so it started off as a joke between friends to see me dressed like that. Some people have read into this as a commentary on style and fashion, and most people have said it's harmless fun. I prefer to keep it ambiguous. Mainly, I just hope people smile when they see the photos."
Since he's not buying the clothes, we wondered if the Gap employees were unhappy about this, but nope. "The Gap employees haven't said anything thus far, seeing as how they encourage customers to try stuff on. Other customers have noticed a few times and they tend to think it's pretty funny!"
We wait with bated breath for the inevitable Baby Gap mannequin project, which would be equally (maybe even more so) hilarious. Someone please do this!
