Just in time for the post-Thanksgiving gut check, now it's the guys' turn as Spanx has expanded its line to include shapewear for the fellas.
Ten years after the company launched its pantyhose and girdle-like bottoms for the gals comes help for gents in the form of crew-neck, V-neck and tank undershirts, briefs and boxer brief underwear. The compression undergarments promise to firm chests, narrow waistlines, flatten tummies, smooth love handles, lift sagging bums and even improve posture, and are available at such stores as Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdales and Dillard's, as well as on the Spanx Web site.
Think your man won't go for it? Tell him it will bring you two closer together as you bond over your common struggle to shimmy and squirm together for the extra 10 minutes it takes to squeeze into the various vise-like contraptions or mill about at parties unable to converse as you strain to get enough oxygen. At least you both look good!
Women for the past decade have been extolling the virtues of Spanx, which has grown to more than 200 products including swimsuits and bras. Even Oprah Winfrey and Gwyneth Paltrow are fans, though if skinny minny Gwynnie needs them, we're all in trouble. Founder Sara Blakely said she was inspired to create the Spanx for Men line after years of entreaties from, among others, men in Hollywood. "After 10 years of looking at women's butts, I'm so excited to get into men's underwear," she said. Ha!
We're all for the dudes joining the club and suffering a bit for the sake of beauty (waxing, anyone?) but ladies, don't forget to warn your man about the perils of shapewear. We're talking about the sometimes unflattering truth that is the real you, bulges, bumps and all, when "letting it all hang out" takes on a whole new meaning.
At least you'll be prepared when your Brad Pitt circa Meet Joe Black suddenly turns into Zach Galifianakis at the end of the evening.
