Mantoux Test in Pregnancy
To be a volunteer at the U of MN hospital, I must take a Mantoux skin test for tuberculosis. I am 18 weeks pregnant with my second child. My first child was stillborn at 31 weeks, so I am extra-paranoid about possible problems this time around. Are there any contraindications to the Mantoux test? What exactly is the test? Will I be exposed to any live agents that could be harmful?Question:
Of course, your own provider would be the best person to ask, but if you wish a second opinion, I would say that this test is perfectly safe during pregnancy. It is even a test that is recommended.
There is no live bacteria or agents in the test and because it is given so locally, just below the skin, there is little or no systemic absorption.Answer:
