Maria Shriver is covering all her bases. Radar Online reports that -- in addition to retaining a high-powered attorney to handle what will probably be a very messy divorce from her philandering husband Arnold Schwarzenegger -- Shriver has hired a private detective to investigate whether Schwarzenegger sired more illegitimate children during their marriage.
Sources tell TMZ that when Shriver, 55, learned that her 63-year-old husband had fathered a child out of wedlock with a member of their own household staff, she was so livid that she wanted to hold a press conference to break the news herself. An inside source described her as "hysterical," but Shriver's friends persuaded her to hold off until the news of their split broke. Per TMZ, Shriver and her "people" waited a few days and then proceeded to leak news of Arnold's love child to the press.
Once Mildred Baena was revealed as the mother of Schwarzenegger's child, speculation was rampant about Schwarzenegger's involvement in the child's life. Baena retired in January after 20 years of working for the Schwarzeneggers. Had he provided her with financial assistance? If Shriver goes through with the divorce, despite the Catholic ban on divorce, she is entitled to a portion of all of that money.
But what if there are more illegitimate children out there? In an indiscreet comment at a red carpet premiere, actress Jane Seymour said, "I heard about two more (out of wedlock kids) somebody else knows about. I even met someone who knows him well." Seymour has since said that she was misquoted, and only repeating gossip she had heard elsewhere.
Shriver, who does not seem inclined at this point to go into hiding, is gearing up for the fight ahead. She has asked the private detective to not only research the possibility of her husband's other infidelities, but also his financial and business dealings. The net worth of Shriver and Schwarzenegger has been estimated at between $200 million and $400 million -- and Shriver undoubtedly wants to know how much she can take the Governator for.
"Maria needs and wants to know exactly what she is dealing with," an inside source tells Radar. "The investigator will likely look into the claims that he fathered multiple children, outside their marriage. Maria has heard the rumors and she wants to find out one way or another, if those claims are true."
