Wow, there's a lot happening in American Idol land this week! First came reports that producers were looking for new celebrity judges. Then, during an interview on Today, Jennifer Lopez hinted that she may not be returning. Then Steven Tyler officially announced his decision not to return. And now sources at Idol have leaked the news that Mariah Carey is close to inking a deal to come on board because show producers "think they need to freshen everything up now."
Besides being a powerhouse vocalist and pop icon in her own right, Carey has some inside connections; Jackson is her manager. Back in February, Jackson was asked if he thought the 42-year-old pop icon would be a good fit at Idol. "She'd be amazing. I mean, I manage her, so of course I'm going to say that. She'd be amazing."
So, if Mimi is a shoe-in for the judges panel, who will be sitting alongside her? "Producers are currently putting out feelers and setting up meetings to see who they can get," a source told E! earlier this week. The site revealed the stars who are being considered, which include Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, Fergie, and Katy Perry.
E! also dished on the possibility of an Idol alum being added into the mix -- Adam Lambert! If Idol puts these two, heavily opinionated, heavily eyelined stars together, this will be a very entertaining panel indeed.
