Mariah Carey has two babies, but only one mother! That's the message that jewelry designer Joan Boyce, a longtime friend of the singer, broadcast over Twitter after she was mistakenly identified as Carey's mother... and not for the first time!
"M, congrats on BET Honors! Did you see they called me your mom again?" Boyce tweeted at Carey last week. "it's so silly! You only have one mom and that's Pat Carey."
"You'd think after she sang the duet with me last year & performed on my ABC Special in front of millions, people would get it!" Mariah responded, posting the video of the duet below. "I was extremely pregnant but here's a link to our moment together on stage 4 anyone who didn't see it. That's my momma!"
Mistaken references to Boyce as Carey's mom -- like this one, from December -- can be found all over the place. The confusion is especially baffling since Carey's real mom, Patricia, is such an important part of her story. An opera singer herself, Pat is the one who first recognized Mariah's talent and began to train her singing voice at a young age. (Here's a video of them being interviewed in 1993.)
Then again, Joyce may be responsible for perpetuating the rumor. During her Home Shopping Network appearances, she has referred to Carey multiple times as her "adopted daughter" or "famous daughter," not meaning it literally. The term of endearment has obviously confused viewers. Has it also irked Carey's actual mother? We found a comment on a news forum from December, by a woman claiming to be Patricia Carey, expressing frustration with Boyce for continuing to call herself Carey's "mother."
"Joan Boyce is NOT my daughter's mom. Each yr.@ this time she perpetuates this myth that she is Mariah's mom," writes the user. "This is false, I do NOT own her jewelry store, never have. My daughter befriends her but they are not related in any way..........I have not celebrated Christmas in Aspen for many yrs. I celebrate in N.Y. with my son & pets...Patricia Carey"
We're not sure if this is the real Patricia Carey, but we'd understand if she was miffed at Boyce for claiming she "adopted" Mariah. At least Boyce was quick to set the record straight on Twitter. Anyhow, Mariah should consider herself lucky that two accomplished women both consider her family -- and that her children will never lack for grandmothers!
