In response to Internet buzz about Mariah Carey's appearance Tuesday at the Palm Springs Film Festival -- where she appeared, well, buzzed while accepting a breakthrough performance award for her dramatic role in Precious -- the Grammy-winning singer has admitted the obvious: that she wasn't entirely sober during her meandering thank-you speech.
Taking questions from the press backstage at the People's Choice Awards on Wednesday, the 40-year-old star was candid about the "party atmosphere" in Palm Springs, which she says she was enjoying with Precious director Lee Daniels just prior to approaching the podium. Defending her antics, Carey recalled, "We'd been sitting there, celebrating this whole time, having little splashes, I hadn't eaten, I pulled up, I didn't want to be late.... That's what it was."
The pop star-turned-actress added, "If people don't understand me and they just think I'm this girl that stands by a microphone and sings 'Hero,' then they're definitely not gonna get me.... But if people knew me they'd understand and have a sense of humor."
