Mariah Carey has a famously amazing closet -- and she wants you to know that she's not hiding in it! The 40-year-old pop icon told The Advocate that, despite rumors to the contrary, she is not bisexual. And she's not about to say that she is, even if it put her in the same category asLady Gaga, Katy Perry and Christina Aguilera.
"If it makes somebody happy to say that [I'm bisexual], then whatever, but that's not the reality," says Carey. "I don't have a discriminatory policy of who I'm friends with, so yes, I'm friends with women who are gay... So I don't get upset when I hear that, because it is what it is. I guess I could lie about it to seem more exciting."
No need to lie about it, Mariah -- being honest about your sexuality is what the gay rights movement is all about!
Carey does believe strongly in gay marriage, as she proved when she invited a gay couple onstage in Las Vegas last year in order for one boyfriend to propose. (Watch the video here!) She tells the magazine that she was raised to be open-minded about same-sex love, since many of her opera singer mother's friends (including a couple who "co-raised" her) were gay. But in terms of her large gay fan based, Carey credits that to mainly the themes and emotions in her songs.
"I have songs about feeling different and alienated, because I grew up with my own issues, being biracial and not having money," she explains. "Some of those lyrics can apply to anybody who feels different. My die-hard gay fans listen to songs like 'Outside' and 'Close My Eyes,' songs that most people wouldn’t know, and these songs have become anthemic for them for their own personal reasons."
Carey is expecting a baby with husband Nick Cannon, and says she'll be supportive of whoever the child grows up to love. "The thing is that you can’t try to make somebody something they’re not," says the mother-to-be. Wise words from a woman who's paved her own way!
Carey's new holiday album, Merry Christmas II You, is in stores now.
