Marie Osmond Speaks Out in Support of Gay Marriage

The star, a devout Mormon, is speaking out in support of the rights of her daughter, who is a lesbian

Ever since she hosted her variety show with brother Donny, Marie Osmond has been associated with traditional American values. Now the former Dancing with the Stars contestant, 53, is speaking out in favor of marriage equality. In the clip below, the singer voices support for the right of people like her daughter Jessica, who is gay, to marry whomever they choose.

"The God that I believe in is a god of love, not fear," Osmond told Diane Sawyer in an interview promoting her new memoir, The Key Is Love: My Mother's Wisdom, A Daughter's Gratitude.

A devout Mormon, Osmond first went public with her oldest daughter's sexual orientation in 2009. At the time, she also said she believed in her daughter's rights, while still believing in the Bible.

In talking to Sawyer, the singer made it clear that she wasn't always so comfortable with Jessica being a lesbian. "My heart broke (when she told me)," said Osmond. "I believe it's easier now, but not as a 17-year-old, not as a child. And I believe there's still judgment."

"I believe in her civil rights, as a mother. I think that my daughter deserves everything that she desires in life. She's a good girl. She's a wonderful child," she continued, adding, "I don't think God made one color flower. I think he made many."

Even though support for gay marriage has grown exponentially in recent years, it's still a bold position for Marie Osmond to take -- considering she's one of the most famous Mormons in the world, and her church is historically opposed to gay marriage.

And the other Osmonds aren't standing behind her, either. Earlier this month, Marie's brother Alan Osmond and his wife hosted a rally "benefitting the protection of marriage between a man and a woman" outside the Utah state capitol building. And as for Donny Osmond, who famously smooched DWTS star Bruno Tonioli after their rumba performance: he has repeatedly said that he opposes gay marriage.

Fortunately, Marie has the support of the Osmond who counts the most: her daughter Jessica, who will hopefully have a lovely wedding someday.
