An Olsen sister is taking the Sundance Film Festival by storm -- but it's not Mary-Kate or Ashley. The twins' younger sister Elizabeth, 21, stars in two psychological thrillers at Sundance, Martha Marcy May Marlene and Silent House.
In Martha Marcy May Marlene, Elizabeth plays Martha, a young woman who escapes from a cult. Supporting cast members include Sarah Paulson, Hugh Dancy and recent Academy Award nominee John Hawkes, who plays the cult’s leader. In Silent House, Elizabeth plays Sarah, a tormented girl forced to deal with her family’s potentially haunted summerhouse.
"I’ve never seen myself on screen before," Elizabeth said in an interview with the New York Times. "The only things I ever did were like straight-to-video things with my sisters and that was like after-school (care) to me."
Elizabeth followed in her big sisters’ footsteps, auditioning for parts at age 10, but gave it up to pursue ballet and sports at school. She’s now a theater major at New York University. "That's actually the first experience I ever had where people would approach me because of my sisters," she said of college life. "I’d have strangers knocking on my door, and they’re like, I heard there’s a party here. I’m like, no, there’s not ever a party here. I don't do that."
Elizabeth's two roles are very different from characters Mary-Kate and Ashley have played over the years, but she said it wasn't intentional to take a different route. The rising star notes that while her veteran sisters are only two years her senior, they "feel much older than me. They’ve been running businesses for a very long time."
