You wouldn't have a Bond movie without James Bond -- but can you have a Bourne movie without Jason Bourne? The Bourne Legacy, the fourth movie in the blockbuster spy franchise, will not star the title hero created by Matt Damon.
"This is not a reboot or a recast or a prequel," says director Tony Gilroy. "There will be a whole new hero, a whole new chapter… Jason Bourne will not be in the film, but he's very much alive."
Gilroy promises that the film does tie into the rest of the series, and that Damon's character will eventually be seen again. (In this movie? In the next one? Who knows?)
This is surprising news for those of us who have come to love Matt Damon's action-star alter ego. Who could possibly replace him? Maybe they're hoping to expand the franchise with a younger actor, like Star Trek's Chris Pine, or Avatar's Sam Worthington. That kind of thing seems to be going on a lot this year: The Hurt Locker's Jeremy Renner is lined up to succeed Tom Cruise in the Mission: Impossible films, while Tobey Maguire is being replaced by The Social Network's Andrew Garfield in the next Spider-Man movie.
Still, we think Matt Damon has a few more years of car-chasing and bullet-dodging left in him. If his buddy George Clooney is still doing it at 49 (see this year's The American), Damon can manage it at 40!
