Matt Lauer is slamming reports that he has left his wife Annette, after cheating rumors surfaced Thursday. The Today host called The National Enquirer's report "a work of fiction," and says he and his wife are still very much together.
"I am living in my apartment with Annette and my children as a family and a couple," Lauer told People in an interview from France, where he's covering the Cannes Film Festival. "I have never moved out. I am not moving out. There is no truth to that."
Lauer acknowledged that he and Annette have had their problems over the years (she filed for divorce in 2006, but withdrew papers a month later), but insists there has never been any infidelity in their marriage. He called the rumors that he's a cheater "ridiculous" and "offensive."
"Have we had a completely perfect, easy marriage? No. But the stories you've read over the years are not true," Lauer said.
"I don't think we're any different than any married couple that's been together for 12 years," he adds. "The accusations [of infidelity] are ridiculous, and I'm not going to [dignify] them with an answer. It's not true."
The Enquirer's story also alleged that Lauer stood up his wife on Valentine's Day to stay out late with two female Canadian broadcasters. But he says his family was actually with him on Feb. 14 skiing at the Whistler resort near Vancouver. And regarding any gossip about his alleged late-night partying, Lauer says the crazy hours of Olympic coverage had him in bed (alone) most nights by 7:30 p.m.
"This is all made up," Lauer said of the tabloid's claims. "All they had to do was check."
