WATCH: Whoa! Matt Lauer Tackles Ryan Seacrest on 'Today'?

Jay Leno unveils shocking -- and, yes, doctored -- behind-the-scenes footage from Lauer and Seacrest's 'Today' interview

Matt Lauer and Ryan Seacrest sure seemed friendly on Wednesday's Today show -- but what happened after the cameras stopped rolling? In this shocking behind-the-scenes clip shown on The Tonight Show, it's clear that Lauer was a little more threatened by Seacrest than he let on. Watch below!

Pretty good tackle, huh? As you may have guessed, that clip was doctored (quite convincingly!) by Jay Leno's video editing team. Fortunately, Lauer thought the gag was pretty funny -- although his colleagues at Today found it even more amusing. Watch their reactions below!

"We have never seen your cat-like reflexes on display like that," said impressed cohost Natalie Morales.

"I'm like a gazelle when you anger me," Matt joked.

During Seacrest's visit to Today, the show made a running gag of the rumor that Seacrest would be replacing Lauer. (Watch clips below!) It turns out that Ryan's "big announcement"was something else entirely: He'll be joining NBC as a special correspondent, with his first assignment being to cover the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. But Lauer did flat-out ask if Seacrest would be taking his job -- to which Seacrest replied, "I see you doing this for as long as you want to, so maybe the question is, how long will you be on the Today show?"

"I think you would be great at this job, and secondly, we have discussed this, Ryan and I are friendly," Lauer explained. "We have talked about this and joked about this. There is no tension here."

Maybe not -- but if we were Ryan Seacrest, we'd be careful about turning our back on Matt "The Gazelle" Lauer!
