Mattel Adds Pro Wrestlers to Barbie's Family

Barbie and American Girl, meet Batista and Triple H! You're all stepsiblings now that Mattel is creating toys for World Wrestling Entertainment.

Whereas American Girl's just-announced 2010 Girl of the Year, Lanie, comes with two books and a National Wildlife Federation partnership, wrestling figures including John Cena, CM Punk, Big Show, and Rey Mysterio come with shiny championship belts, tight shorts, and ring-worthy "flex force."

This kind of pairing would make the producers of The Real World, Wife Swap, and Is She Really Going Out With Him? salivate with envy if these were real people. But we're talking toys, a place where branded worlds rarely collide.

While there will may be little actual marketing synergy between the two toy parties, it's fun to imagine American Girls hitting each other over the head with aluminum chairs, Barbie's toy boy Ken palling around awkwardly with The Undertaker, and Vince McMahon managing Barbie's Hollywood career, Lohan-style.

Just think of Mattel as a "big tent" toy company where boys and girls of all stripes can enact their vicarious fantasies, be they sickly sweet or superficially sadistic.
