In the past few months, Matthew McConaughey has become the incredible shrinking man. The Magic Mike actor, who had very little body fat to begin with, has been shedding weight like crazy for his role as an HIV-positive prescription-drug smuggler in the film The Dallas Buyers Club. By the time the movie started shooting this month, the actor had dropped a startling 38 pounds. During an interview with the website HitFix, the 43-year-old actor described the challenge of attaining his skin-and-bones physique. Watch the interview here:
"There's been plateaus -- like, getting past 170 was really hard, but then once you get to167, the next seven come off easy," the actor explained. "Getting past 160, really hard. But then you fly down to 150. Getting passed 150 was really hard and then, bam! Got down to 143 and that's where I want to be. So, once you get past the plateau, your body seems to understand, 'okay... this is where we are,' and so the energy rises."
Even so, McConaughey estimates that he now has 35 percent less energy than he did when he was at his normal weight. And he says that he's still sticking to a very strict diet and exercise regime.
"I'm doing cardio, but I'll tell you...it's 90 percent diet," he told the website. "Right now, I'm not losing any more weight if I burn 1,500 calories, two hours of cardio in an afternoon, or if I don't. It doesn't matter. It's a matter of how much I eat or how little I eat."
While he didn't say how many calories he's eating, it's pretty obvious that McConaughey is dreaming about food -- since he knows exactly what he wants to eat as soon as his diet is over.
"I will have some 70 percent beef, 30 percent fat ground beef, maybe a half-pound cheeseburger with another three types of cheese. I'll prepare it all and I'll make sure that it takes three hours just to prepare," he said. "I'm going to have buns with butter on both sides, toasted and grilled. I'm going to melt the cheese on the top bun, Hellman's Real Mayonnaise. I want kosher dill pickles sliced nice and thin, diced white onions, slightly grilled until they get almost hard, and some thin jalapeno slices.
Spoken like a true Texan! Realistically, though, McConaughey knows that his cheeseburger dreams may take a while to come true. "Your organs [and] muscles shrink, your organs shrink [and] my stomach has shrunk as well," he said of his extreme weight loss. "So, as much as I can't wait to have that cheeseburger on the day [shooting ends], it'll probably be damn hard to eat the whole thing."
