The Story Behind Matthew McConaughey's Dramatic Weight Loss

The formerly buff actor is looking scary-skinny these days. Find out why he's dropping the pounds!

Matthew McConaughey has never been a guy with body issues. He seems to be shirtless more often than not (proof here!), and he stripped down to a thong for his last movie, Magic Mike. So why is he suddenly dropping weight like crazy? Is everything okay in McConaugheyland?

In a July interview with Larry King, the actor acknowledged his extreme weight loss -- and explained that he's doing it for a role. Watch the clip below.

"I’ve got a role coming up in the middle of September. I’ve lost about 15 pounds, I’ve gotta lose about 15 more," McConaughey, 42, told King while visiting his Ora TV webseries, Larry King Now. "I should not look healthy by the time I'm doing this."

In the film, The Dallas Buyers Club, McConaughey plays Ron Woodroof, a real-life Texas man who contracted HIV from drug use in the 1980s and began smuggling medicine from Mexico. The film has been a long time in the works, and now that it's being made, McConaughey has thrown himself into preparing for the part.

"I'm kind of looking at it as a cleanse; it's a bit of a spiritual cleanse, mental cleanse," the actor said of his strict diet. "(I'm) drinking a lot of tea. It takes a while for your body to understand that it has to feed off of itself and that you're not going to give it something else from the outside."

Judging from the skin-and-bones look he's sporting these days, his discipline paid off. We're looking forward to Matthew's performance -- and to seeing his healthy bod return to the beach after shooting is over!
