Meat and Cheese Can Be as Unhealthy as Smoking, Some Mean Docs Say

New research states that animal-based proteins will eventually do us in. See ya later, delicious ham sandwich!

Question: What is more dangerous for your health — a chicken wing or a cigarette?

Well, according to experts at University of Southern California, they’re both equally deadly. A new study published in the recent journal of Cell Metabolism states that middle-aged adults who eat a protein-rich diet (via animals) are four times more likely — 74 percent! — to die of cancer compared to adults who consume a low-protein diet. And this death threat is on the same risk level as smoking. The meat, milk and cheese lovers were also “several times” more likely to pass away from diabetes.

It all comes down to the fact that protein controls the growth hormone IGF-I. While it helps the body grow, it drops considerably after the age of 65, which is the reason for frailty. This hormone has also been linked to cancer susceptibility.

The “good” news: The proteins that won’t kill you are the plant-based foods, such as beans and tofu. And there was no evidence that either fats or carbs would send us to an early grave.

"The majority of Americans are eating about twice as much proteins as they should, and it seems that the best change would be to lower the daily intake of all proteins but especially animal-derived proteins," said author Valter Longo, the Edna M. Jones Professor of Biogerontology at the USC Davis School of Gerontology, as reported by LiveScience. "But don't get extreme in cutting out protein; you can go from protected to malnourished very quickly."

So what’s my take on this? I give. Since protein is out, I'm going to live to on what I've always wanted to live on in the first place — pasta.

I just wonder what the World's Oldest Person would have to say about laying off the protein.
