It was an emotional night on American Idol as judges Jennifer Lopez, Randy Jackson and Steven Tyler narrowed the field of prospective champs to just 13. First the five guys and five girls who received the most viewer votes were announced.
This year's Top 10:
1. Phillip Phillips
2. Jessica Sanchez
3. Hollie Cavanagh
4. Joshua Ledet
5. Heejun Han
6. Shannon Magrane
7. Skylar Laine
8. Elise Testone
9. Colton Dixon
10. Jermaine Jones
Following the announcement of the top 10 vote recipients, the judges selected the competitors for the three wild-card spots. The first contestant selected to "sing for her life" was Jennifer Hirsh, who sang "Oh! Darlin'."
"You went for the gusto," Jackson told her. "It was a good performance."
The five other potential wild cards were Jeremy Rosado, Brielle Von Hugel, Deandre Brackensick, Erika Van Pelt and Reed Grimm all of whom were given one last chance to perform. But in the end, the judges could only pick three to continue on the competition.
The lucky three narrowed down to Erika, Deandre and Jeremy.
Erika had impressed the judges with her rendition of Lady Gaga's "Edge of Glory," which brought the crowd to their feet. "Out of the park, baby, out of the park!" Tyler screamed after her performance.
Deandre sang the popular "Georgia On My Mind" in his signature falsetto, earning praise from Lopez. "I'm feeling the fire from you," she told him. "You should sing like that every single time you get up there."
Jeremy, who fell on the floor weeping after his name was announced, had chosen a former Idol champ for his song choice. He performed Carrie Underwood's "I Know You Won't," which prompted Lopez to say: "I believe in this kid. I believe in 'Jer Bear'."
American Idol returns next Wednesday, when the 13 contestants pay tribute to the late, great Whitney Houston.
